     Captain Lewis Roper FitzMaurice was born on 29 April 1816.1 He was the son of unknown FitzMaurice.1 He married Mary Butler circa 1851.1 He died on 22 April 1893 at age 76.1,2
     Captain Lewis Roper FitzMaurice was commissioned on 12 January 1831, in the service of the Royal Navy.1 He gained the rank of Mate in 1837, on board H.M.S. Beagle, during its voyage of survey and exploration from 1837 to 1843.1 He gained the rank of Assistant Surveyor in 1841.1 He retired from the military in 1860, with the rank of Captain, late of the Royal Navy.1 He was a naturalist and painter.1
     Numerous features in Northern Australia and Tasmania are named after him, as a result of his surveying work on the H.M.S. Beagle.1
