Hugh George Christian was born on 23 November 1787 at Newport, Isle of Wight, EnglandG.1 He was the son of Admiral Sir Hugh Cloberry Christian and Anne Leigh.1 He married Anne Fisher, daughter of Samuel Fisher, in 1822.2 He died on 28 February 1861 at age 73 at Fyshe Hall, Knaresborough, Yorkshire, EnglandG.1 He was buried in 1861 at Knaresborough, Yorkshire, EnglandG.1
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He was removed from Eton to Mrs Delafosse's at the express desire of HRH The Duke of Clarence, later King William IV, who had befriended his father. He now took a fatherly interest in the talented boy, and frequently had him to Bushey for his holidays.1 He was in the Indian Civil Service.1
At 16 years of age, Hugh had a Writership in the Indian Civil Service offered to him, which he accepted, proceeding to Calcutta to continue his studies at Fort William College. A student of brilliant ability, he left there with honours never before surpassed: 7 Gold Medals, 4,000 Rupees, and a Degree of Honour for Highest Attainment in Sanskrit, Persian and Bengalee. Entered the Bengal Civil Service, 1802. Appointed to the Settlement Office, Furrackabad, 1808; Collector, 1814; Senior Special Commissioner in N.W.Provinces, 1821; Retired, 1829. Was offered a Directorship on the East India Company. He was invited to represent Knaresborough in Parliament, and King William, whose friendship he enjoyed down to the time of His Majesty's death, offered him a post in his household, but he declined these offers, desiring only rest and leisure after many arduous years in India. Hencesforth he devoted all his time to charitable work round about his home near Knaresborough.1
