Captain Jonathan Whitby Christian was born in 1770 at Old Grange, County Waterford, Ireland.2 He was the son of William Christian and Grace Baker.1 He married Mary Shaw, daughter of William Shaw and Mary Markham.1 He died in 1834.1 He was buried in 1834 at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland.2
Captain Jonathan Whitby Christian gained the rank of Midshipman circa 1780 in the service of the Royal Navy, serving in H.M.S. Queen Charlotte under Earl Howe, with Admiral Sir Roger Curtis and with his cousin Admiral Sir Hugh Cloberry Christian.2 In 1785 Old Grange was sold, during his minority.2 He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the Royal Navy.1 He saw much active service against the French and would have risen high in the service but for the fact that he was Flag-Lieutenant to Sir Hyde Parker at Copenhagen and shared in his misfortune, being long unemplyed.1 He was Inspector General of the Irish Coastguards.1
