     James Drury Edward Kelly is the son of Lt.-Col. Arthur Hamilton Kelly.¹ He married Elizabeth Georgiana Margaret Barttelot, daughter of Lt.-Col. William Frederick Geoffrey Nelson Barttelot and Jane Elizabeth Stirling, on 2 July 1955.¹ He and Elizabeth Georgiana Margaret Barttelot were divorced in 1973.¹
     He gained the rank of officer in the service of the Essex Regiment.¹
