He was the son of Karl Christian Prinz zu Waldeck und Pyrmont and Amalie Henriette Prinz zur Lippe-Biesterfeld.2,3 He married, firstly, Dorothea Gage, Gräfin von Rhoden, daughter of Reverend Robert Gage and Catherine Davys-Boyd, on 2 June 1864.1 He married, secondly, Marie Luise Augustine Prinzessin zu Hohenlohe-Öhringen, daughter of Felix Eugen Wilhelm Ludwig Albrecht Karl Prinz zu Hohenlohe-Öhringen and Alexandrine Prinzessin von Hanau und Horowitz, on 8 May 1886.4 He died on 11 January 1897 at age 55 at GermanyG.
