     George Jackson Churchward was born on 31 January 1857 at Stoke Gabriel, Devon, England.2 He was the son of George Churchward and Adelina Churchward.1 He died on 19 December 1933 at age 76 at Swindon, Wiltshire, England, killed by a glancing blow from one of his trains.2
     He was chief assistant mechanical engineer of the Great Western Railway (GWR) between 1897 and 1902.2 He held the office of Mayor of Swindon in 1900.2 He was chief mechanical engineer of the Great Western Railway (GWR) between 1902 and 1922.2 He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.)2
