     Sir Stephen Lewis Edmonstone Hastings was born on 4 May 1921.2 He was the son of Major Lewis Aloysius Macdonald Hastings and Edith Meriel Edmonstone.2,1 He married Harriet Mary Elisabeth Tomlin, daughter of Colonel Julian Latham Tomlin, in 1948.2 He and Harriet Mary Elisabeth Tomlin were divorced in 1971.2 He married, secondly, Hon. Elizabeth-Anne Marie Gabrielle Fitzalan-Howard, daughter of Henry Edmund Fitzalan-Howard, 2nd Viscount FitzAlan of Derwent and Joyce Elizabeth Mary Langdale, on 2 September 1975.2 He died on 10 January 2005 at age 83.
     He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.2 He was educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, EnglandG.2 He was commissioned in 1939 with the rank of Ensign, in the service of the Scots Guards.2 He fought in the Second World War, in the Western Desert and Italy.2 He gained the rank of Major between 1941 and 1943 in the 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.2 He gained the rank of Major in 1943 in the 1st SAS Regiment.2 He gained the rank of Major in 1944 in the No 1 Special Forces (SOE), in Italy.2 He was with the Foreign Office between 1948 and 1960.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.)
