Sir Manasseh Massey Lopes, 1st Bt.1

     Sir Manasseh Massey Lopes, 1st Bt. was born on 27 January 1755 at Jamaica.1 He was the son of Mordecai Rodriguez Lopes and Rebecca Pereira.2 He married Charlotte Yeates, daughter of John Yeates, in 1795.1 He died on 26 March 1831 at age 76, without male.1
     He was given the name of Manasseh Lopes at birth.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Wiltshire.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Devon.1 He held the office of Recorder for Westbury.1 In 1802 he abjured Judaism for the Church of England.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for New Romney in 1802.1 In 1805 his name was legally changed to Manasseh Massey Lopes by Royal Licence.1 He was created 1st Baronet Lopes [U.K.] on 1 November 1805.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Barnstaple in 1812.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Barnstaple between 1818 and 1819, but was unseated for the briibery at Grampound and was sentenced to two years and £10,000 fine.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Westbury in 1823.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Westbury in 1826.1
