     Robert Swinton, 20th of that Ilk was the son of John Swinton, 19th of that Ilk and Katherine Lauder.2 He married by contract, firstly, Catherine Hay, daughter of William Hay, 5th Lord Hay of Yester and Margaret Kerr, on 15 February 1587/88.2 He married, secondly, Jean Hepburn, daughter of Sir Patrick Hepburn of Whitecastle and Margaret Cockburn, in 1597.2 He died in 1628.2
     He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Berwickshire between 1612 and 1621.2 He held the office of Sheriff of Berwickshire in 1620.
