Colonel William Macdowall, 1st of Castlesemple1

     Colonel William Macdowall, 1st of Castlesemple was born on 1 March 1678.1 He was the son of William Macdowall, 15th of Garthland and Grissel Beaton.2 He married, firstly, Mary Tovey, daughter of Richard Tovey.1 He married, secondly, Isabella Wallace, daughter of Sir Hugh Wallace.1 He died in 1748.1
     He gained the rank of Colonel in the Briitsh Army, served in St Christopher's, West Indies, where he acquired a considerable plantation.1 In 1727 he purchased the ancient barony of Castlesemple in the parish of Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, from 11th Lord Sempill , also other baronies.1

     Mary Tovey is the daughter of Richard Tovey.2 She married Colonel William Macdowall, 1st of Castlesemple, son of William Macdowall, 15th of Garthland and Grissel Beaton.1
     Her married name became Macdowall.

William Macdowall, 18th of Garthland and 2nd of Castlesemple1

     William Macdowall, 18th of Garthland and 2nd of Castlesemple was born in 1700.2 He was the son of Colonel William Macdowall, 1st of Castlesemple and Mary Tovey.3 He married Elizabeth 'Black Bess' Graham, daughter of Admiral James Graham, 1st of Airth and Lady Mary Livingston, in 1748.3 He died in 1776.3
     He was recognised by Lord Lyon King of Arms, and matriculated his arms at the Lyons Court on 21 April 1749.3

James Macdowall1

     James Macdowall was born in 1740.1 He was the son of Colonel William Macdowall, 1st of Castlesemple and Isabella Wallace.2 He died at West IndiesG.1
     He gained the rank of Captain in the King's Own.1 He emigrated to West IndiesG.2 On 14 June 1766 he was seized with his brother of the lands of Kirriebroom.1

     He succeeded his uncle Biggar (otherwise Wallace) of Woolmet.1
