     William Alexander Russell Holmes à Court was born on 19 April 1878.¹ He was the son of Arthur Wyndham Holmes à Court and Ann Berkeley Hartman-Berkeley.² He married Priscilla Gray, daughter of Charles Gray, on 15 March 1916.¹ He died on 6 August 1942 at age 64.¹
     He fought in the First World War, where he was severely wounded.¹ He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the Princess Patricia's Light Infantry.¹
