     He was educated at King's School, Canterbury, Kent, England^G.¹ He was educated at Diocesan College, Rondebosch, Cape Province, South Africa^G.¹ He fought in the Second World War, where he was wounded and became a POW.¹ He gained the rank of Major in the The Buffs.¹ He was appointed Member, Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.) in 1944.¹
