George Murray was the son of Sir Patrick Murray, 1st Lord Elibank and Helen Lindsay.2 He married, firstly, Margaret Moncreiff, daughter of Sir John Moncreiff of that Ilk, 1st Bt. and Lady Mary Murray, in 1667.1 He married, secondly, Elizabeth Erskine, daughter of Sir John Erskine, on 13 February 1670.1 He died circa 1702.1
     He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Horse Guards.1 He lived at Pittencreiff, Fife, ScotlandG.1
