     Charles McGarel Johnston was born on 3 May 1876.¹ He was the son of George Birch Johnston and Jane Waring Evans.² He married Margaret Thompson, daughter of Arthur Raine Thompson, on 2 November 1908.¹ He died on 4 October 1918 at age 42, lost at sea after his ship was torpedoed off the Irish coast en route to South Africa.¹
     He was educated at Cheltenham College, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England^G.¹ He fought in the Matabele War in 1896.¹ He gained the rank of Trooper in 1896 in the BSA Company.¹ He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the 5th Rhodesian Volunteers.¹ He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1902.¹

     Margaret Thompson was born circa 1881.¹ She was the daughter of Arthur Raine Thompson.² She married Charles McGarel Johnston, son of George Birch Johnston and Jane Waring Evans, on 2 November 1908.¹ She died on 22 February 1970.¹
     From 2 November 1908, her married name became Johnston.

     George Robert Arthur McGarel Johnston was born on 2 September 1916.¹ He was the son of Charles McGarel Johnston and Margaret Thompson.² He married Erika Thyra Ekman, daughter of Allen Birger Ekman, on 13 November 1954.¹ He died in 1992.³
     He was educated at Cheltenham College, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England^G.¹ He fought in the Second World War, with the Royal Air Force, and was mentioned in despatches.¹ He graduated from St. John's College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England^G, in 1939 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)¹ He was with the Colonial Administration Service, Tanganyika in 1939.¹ He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (D.F.C.) in 1941 and bar (1944.)¹ He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1944.¹ He was District Officer and District Commissioner of Tanganyika before 1951.¹ He was appointed Member, Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.) in 1951.¹ He lived in 1976 at Lusaka, Zambia^G.¹

     Erika Thyra Ekman is the daughter of Allen Birger Ekman.² She married George Robert Arthur McGarel Johnston, son of Charles McGarel Johnston and Margaret Thompson, on 13 November 1954.¹

     Anabel Margaret Johnston was born on 27 December 1955.¹ She is the daughter of George Robert Arthur McGarel Johnston and Erika Thyra Ekman.²
