Thorfinn II, 1st Earl of Caithness was born circa 1009.2 He was the son of Sigurd II, Jarl of Orkney and Donalda of Alba.2 He married Ingibiorg Finnsdottir, daughter of Finn Arnasson, Jarl of Halland and Bergljot (?), before 1038.3 He died between 1056 and 1065.2
Thorfinn II, 1st Earl of Caithness also went by the nick-name of Thorfinn 'the Black'.1 He succeeded as the Jarl of Orkney in 1014.3 He was created 1st Earl of Caithness [Scotland] circa 1030, creatd by his grandfather, Malcolm II.3,1 In 1034 on King Malcolm II's death, he disputed Duncan's right to the Scottish throne.4 In 1040 after Duncan's murder, he obtained dominion over the whole of the north of Scotland.4

He was Lay Abbot of Dunkeld.2 He was also known as Duncan O'Neill.3 He gained the title of Mormaer of Atholl.1 He fought in the Battle of Luncarty circa 990, where he commanded the left wing, and where the Danes were so crushingly defeated that their raids on that part of what subsequently became Perthshire, ceased.2
