     He was educated at King's School, Grantham, Lincolnshire, England.1 He was a practising solicitor, with Maples and McCraith.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) in 1892.1 He was appointed Knight Bachelor in January 1918.1

     He gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in September 1914 in the Royal Enginners.2 He fought in the First World War, where he was severely wounded.1 He gained the rank of Captain in December 1915.2 He gained the rank of Major in 1916.2
