     General Sir Basil Ian Spencer Gourlay was born on 13 November 1920 at Choriton, Lancashire, England.1 He was the son of Brigadier Kenneth Ian Gourlay and Victoria May Oldrini.1 He married Natasha Zinovieff in 1948.1 He died on 17 July 2013 at age 92 at London, England.1
     General Sir Basil Ian Spencer Gourlay usually went by his middle name of Ian.1 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1944.1 He fought in the Second World War.1 He was appointed Member, Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.) in 1948.1 He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1956.1 He was Commandant-General of the Royal Marines between 1971 and 1975.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1973.1 He was appointed Commander, Royal Victorian Order (C.V.O.) in 1990.1
