     Michael Balfour, 1st Lord Balfour of Burleigh was the son of Sir James Balfour and Margaret Balfour.1 A contract for the marriage of Michael Balfour, 1st Lord Balfour of Burleigh and Margaret Lundie was signed on 12 July 1591.1,2 He died on 15 March 1619.1
     In 1569 he obtained charters of lands in Fife and Banff.1 He was appointed Knight before 1592.1 He held the office of Ambassador to the Grand Duke of Tuscany and the Duke of Lorraine in 1606.1 He was created 1st Lord Balfour of Burleigh, co. Kinross [Scotland] on 16 July 1607.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland]1 On 7 September 1614 he was granted the Barony of Kilwinning with the title of Lord of Kilwinning.3 He lived at Burleigh Castle, Orwell, Kinross-shire, ScotlandG.1
     A wife of Mariot Adamson is sometimes attributed to him, but this is the wife of another Michael Balfour of Montquhany.3,4
