     He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Manchester between 1867 and 1874.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Manchester between 1876 and 1885.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Manchester South-West between 1886 and 1895.1 He was chairman of John Bright & Brothers at Rochdale, Lancashire, England.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.)1
