     John Burns was born on 13 November 1775.1 He was the son of Reverend John Burns and Elizabeth Stevenson.1 He married Isabella Duncan, daughter of Reverend John Duncan, on 27 April 1801.1 He died on 18 June 1850 at age 74, drowned in Orion, off Port Patrick.1
     He graduated with a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.)1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.)1 He was Regius Porfessor of Surgery at Glasgow University, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1
