     Lt.-Col. Sir Archibald David Stirling was born on 15 November 1915.1 He was the son of Brig.-Gen. Archibald Stirling of Keir and Hon. Margaret Mary Fraser. He died in November 1990.1
     Lt.-Col. Sir Archibald David Stirling usually went by his middle name of David.1 He fought in the Second World War, where he founded the Special Air Service, which operated in the North African desert behind enemy lines.1 He was decorated with the award of Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1942.1 He was commanding officer of the 1 Special Air Service Regiment in 1943 until his capture.2 He gained the rank of Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the Scots Guards.1 He was invested as a Knight in 1990.1
