Sir Joseph Benjamin Robinson, 1st Bt. was born on 3 August 1840.1 He was the son of Robert John Robinson and Martha Emily Strutt.2 He married Elizabeth Rebecca Ferguson, daughter of James Ferguson, on 3 October 1877.1 He died on 30 October 1929 at age 89.1
He held the office of Member, Legislative Assembly (M.L.A.) [Cape of Good Hope]1 He fought in the Basuto War.1 He held the office of Mayor of Kimberley in 1880.1 He organised and commanded the first mounted volunteer force in Griqualand West.1 He was chairman of Robinson's South African Banking Company and gold mines in Transvaal.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) [South Africa], for Kimberley.1 He was created 1st Baronet Robinson, of Hawthornden, Wynberg, in the Province of the Cape of Good Hope in the Union of South Africa, and Dudley House, City of Westminster [U.K.] on 27 July 1908.1
