John Ryland Pinsent was born on 12 August 1888.1 He was the son of Sir Richard Alfred Pinsent, 1st Bt. and Laura Proctor Ryland.2 He married Kathleen May Boyce, daughter of Colonel Ernest Joseph George Boyce, on 16 September 1915.1 He died on 3 October 1957 at age 69.1
He was educated at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, EnglandG.1 He fought in the First World War, he was mentioned in despatches four times.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in the Royal Engineers.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1918.1 He was the assistant master between 1926 and 1934 at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, EnglandG.1 He held the office of Alderman of the Winchester City Council.1 He held the office of Mayor of Winchester between 1936 and 1937.1 He fought in the Second World War.1 He held the office of Civil Service Commissioner between 1945 and 1950.1 He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1949.1 He was appointed Officier, Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur.1
