     Shane 'an Diomais' O'Neill was born circa 1530.1 He was the son of Con 'Baccach' O'Neill, 1st Earl of Tyrone and unknown daughter O'Byrne.2 He married, secondly, Catherine Maclean, daughter of Lachlan 'Cattanach' Maclean, 7th of Duart and Marion Maclean.1 He married, firstly, Catherine McDonnell, daughter of James McDonnell of Islay.1 He and Catherine McDonnell were divorced.1 He died on 2 June 1567, murdered by the McDonnells at a peace conference.2
     Shane 'an Diomais' O'Neill also went by the nick-name of Shane 'an Diomais' (or in English, The Proud.)1 He held the office of Dynast of Tyrone between 1559 and 1567.1 In 1562 after years of resistance to the English, he submitted to Queen Elizabeth I in London in person.1 He defeated the Scots of Antrim, capturing their Chief (and his future father-in-law), James McDonnell of Islay, and the latter's brother (and his (Shane's) future brother-in-law) Sorley Buie.1
