George Macdonnell, 6th of Leek was born on 12 August 1780 at St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada.1 He was the son of General John Æneas Macdonnell, 5th of Leek and Helen Leslie of Fetternear.2 He married Hon. Mary Laura Charlotte Arundell, daughter of James Everard Arundell, 9th Baron of Arundell of Wardour and Hon. Mary Christina Arundell, on 18 April 1820.1 He died on 16 May 1870 at age 89.1
He was commissioned in 1796, in the service of the Lord Darlington's Regiment.1 In 1812 he raised Glengarry Light Infantry Regiment to repulse the American invasion of Canada.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the 79th Highlanders.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1817.1
