Sir James Ralph Darling was born on 18 June 1899 at Tonbridge, Kent, England.1 He was the son of Augustine Major Darling and Jane Baird Nimmo.1 He died on 1 November 1995 at age 96 at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.1
He was educated at Tonbridge School, Tonbridge, Kent, England.1 He gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant between 1918 and 1919 in the service of the Royal Field Artillery.1 He was a teacher between 1921 and 1924 at Merchant Taylors' School, Crosby, Lancashire, England.1 He was the headmaster between 1930 and 1961 at Geelong Grammer School, Geelong, Victoria, Australia.1 He was invested as a Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.).1 He was chairman of the Australian Broadcasting Commission between 1961 and 1967.1
