Sir James Hamilton was the son of Sir William Hamilton and Elizabeth Johnston.1 He married, firstly, Mary Jacob, daughter of Sir Robert Jacob.2 He married, secondly, Eleanor Innes, daughter of Sir James Innes of Thurston.2 He died circa April 1696.3 He was buried circa 17 April 1696 at Holyrood Church, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.3
He lived at Manor Elieston, County Tyrone, IrelandG.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant on 4 September 1686 in the a regiment of foot in the castle of Stirling.1
