He fought in the War of Spanish Succession in 1704, as Adjutant-General to General Murray.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1712 in the Royal Horse Guards (Blues.)1 He gained the rank of Chevalier in 1715 in the Austrian Army, as Chevalier Jacques de Gibson.1 He was Adjutant to Prince Eugene of Savoy in 1717.1 He was Colonel Commandant of the Fortress of Courtrai in 1720.1 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1733.1 He held the office of Governor of Courtrai between 1740 and 1744.1
