EMail from Greys INN Librarian 21st Oct 2000:-

The short answer is that we have no further details in the Inn's records on Ralph Coningsby's background, but you may be interested to know what lies behind that assertion.

The printed register of the Inn's admissions gives the forename as Richard rather than Ralph, but the archivist, Dr Clare Rider, confirms that this is an error, and that the entry is indeed that of Ralph Coningsby. The preceding name in the list has the date 11th February 1651/2, and the subsequent name has 8th March 1651/2, but for Coningsby no date of admission is given. There is also no information on either his parentage or his place of origin. The further back one goes in time the more likely it is that one or both of these pieces of information will be lacking, but usually at least
the place is given. To find both lacking at that sort of date is very unusual. So although Ralph Coningsby does seem to have been a member of this Inn before his move to Gray's, mystery and confusion surround the matter.2
