     John Alexander French was born on 31 August 1848.1 He was the son of Reverend Edward French and Mary King.2,1 He married, firstly, Elizabeth Mary Stockley, daughter of John Surtees Stockley and Alicia Diana Catherine Gabbett, on 4 August 1875.1 He married, secondly, Josephine Honoria Hardman, daughter of Reverend J. W. Hardman, on 11 December 1906.1 He died on 9 November 1916 at age 68.1
     He graduated from Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland, with a Doctor of Law (LL.D.).1 He was a practising solicitor.3 He was President of the Law Society of Ireland.1 He lived at St. Ann's, Donnybrook, County Dublin, Ireland.3
