John Dane was born on 7 January 1810.1 He was the son of John Dane and Margaret Humphries.2 He married Mary Hayes on 23 February 1834.1 He died on 30 April 1882 at age 72.1
He was commissioned in 1825, in the service of the Army.1 He gained the rank of officer in the 37th Foot and 62nd Foot.1 He emigrated to AustraliaG arriving on 1847 where he took a grant of land in Victoria.1 He held the office of Member of the Legislative Assembly (M.L.A.) [Victoria] between 1849 and 1876.1 He had two daughters.1
