     John Steele Synge was born on 6 September 1903.¹ He was the son of Henry Richard Synge and Lalla Marion Gill.¹ He married, firstly, Kathleen Mary Allman, daughter of Richard Gordon Allman, on 11 April 1928.¹ He married Nancy Broughton Lord, daughter of Charles Stuart Lord, on 17 November 1945.¹ He died on 14 September 1971 at age 68.¹
     He was educated at King's School, Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia^G.¹ He was with the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Ltd.¹ He was with the Department of the Navy.¹ He fought in the Second World War, with the Australian Imperial Force, in New Guinea.¹
