     Melius de Villiers was born on 5 September 1849.1 He was the son of Charles Christian de Villiers and Dorothea Elizabeth Retief.2 He married Adelaide Holmes-Orr, daughter of Reverend John Holmes-Orr, in 1883.1 He died on 6 July 1938 at age 88.1

     Aletta Johanna Jordaan was the daughter of Jan Pieter Jordaan.2 She married John Henry de Villiers, 1st Baron de Villiers, son of Charles Christian de Villiers and Dorothea Elizabeth Retief, on 7 March 1871.1 She died in August 1922.1
     From 7 March 1871, her married name became de Villiers. As a result of her marriage, Aletta Johanna Jordaan was styled as Baroness de Villiers on 21 September 1910.
