     General Sir Laurence James Oliphant, 9th of Condie was born on 14 December 1846.¹ He was the son of Laurence Oliphant, 8th of Condie and Marianne Oliphant.² He married Hon. Mary Monica Gerard, daughter of Robert Tolver Gerard, 1st Baron Gerard of Bryn and Harriet Clifton, on 19 November 1878.¹ He died on 6 July 1914 at age 67.¹
     He fought in the Sudan Campaign in 1885.³ He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Perthshire.¹ He gained the rank of General in the service of the Grenadier Guards.⁴ He fought in the Boer War between 1901 and 1902, where he was mentioned in despatches.³ He was Commander-in-Chief of the Home District between 1903 and 1906.¹ He was invested as a Knight Commander, Royal Victorian Order (K.C.V.O.) in 1905.¹ He was Commander-in-Chief of the Northern Command between 1907 and 1911.¹ He was invested as a Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1911.¹ He lived at Newton, Perthshire, Scotland.⁴

     Mary Anne Oliphant is the daughter of Laurence Oliphant, 8th of Condie and Marianne Oliphant.² She married Thomas Stubbs Walker in 1867.¹
      From 1867, her married name became Walker.
