James FitzJohn FitzGerald, 13th Earl of Desmond was the son of Sir John of Desmond. He married, secondly, Móre O'Carroll, daughter of Mulrony McShane O'Carroll and Margaret O'Brien. He married, firstly, Lady Katherine Butler, daughter of Piers Butler, 8th Earl of Ormonde and Lady Margaret FitzGerald, in February 1549/50.2 He died on 14 October 1558.3
He held the office of Lord High Treasurer [Ireland].4 He gained the title of 13th Earl of Desmond.1

Donald MacCarthy Mor, 1st and last Earl of Clancare was the son of Donald MacCormac Ladrach MacCarthy Mor.1 He married Lady Honora FitzGerald, daughter of James FitzJohn FitzGerald, 13th Earl of Desmond and Móre O'Carroll.1 He died in 1596/97, without surviving male issue.1 He was buried at Murcuss AbbeyG.1
He was appointed Knight on 26 June 1558 at Limerick, County Limerick, IrelandG.1 He was created 1st Earl of Clancare [Ireland] on 24 June 1565.1 He was created 1st Baron Valentia, in Ireland [Ireland] on 24 June 1565.1 He resigned as Earl of Clancare in 1597 and renounced his allegiance to England.1
