George Stephen, 1st Baron Mount Stephen1

     George Stephen, 1st Baron Mount Stephen was born on 5 June 1829 at Scotland.1 He was the son of William Stephen and Elspet Smith.1 He married, firstly, Charlotte Annie Kane on 8 March 1853.1 He married, secondly, Gian Tufnell, daughter of Captain Robert George Tufnell, after 1896.1 He died on 29 November 1921 at age 92.1
     He adopted Alice Stephen.2 He completed the St. Paul and Pacific and Canadian Pacific Railways.1 He was president of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company between 1880 and 1888.1 He was created 1st Baronet Stephen [U.K.] on 3 March 1886.1 He was created 1st Baron Mount Stephen, of Mount Stephen, in the Province of British Columbia and Dominion of Canada, and of Dufftown, co. Banff [U.K.] on 23 June 1891.1

     She adopted Alice Stephen.2 From 8 March 1853, her married name became Stephen.1 As a result of her marriage, Charlotte Annie Kane was styled as Baroness Mount Stephen on 23 June 1891.

     Gian Tufnell is the daughter of Captain Robert George Tufnell.1 She married George Stephen, 1st Baron Mount Stephen, son of William Stephen and Elspet Smith, after 1896.1
     She was invested as a Lady of Grace, Order of St. John of Jerusalem (L.G.St.J.).1 As a result of her marriage, Gian Tufnell was styled as Baroness Mount Stephen after 1896. From after 1896, her married name became Stephen.1
