William John Legh, 1st Baron Newton was born on 19 December 1828.1 He was the son of William Legh and Mary Wilkinson.2 He married Emily Jane Wodehouse, daughter of Venerable Charles Wodehouse, on 29 May 1856 at St. George Hanover Square, London, England.3 He died on 15 December 1898 at age 69.1
He was Captain 21st Fus, served Crimea, Lieutenant-Colonel Lancashire Hus, Member of Parliament (M.P.) (C) S –65 and E Cheshire 1868–85 Lancs 1859.1 He was Justice of the Peace (J.P.).1 He was County Lancaster (UK).1 He was educated Rugby.1 He was Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) (Cheshire and Lancs).1 He lived Newton in Makerfield.1 He gained the title of 1st Baron Legh.1 On 27 August 1892 so created.1
