Lt.-Col. Joseph George Morrogh Bernard was born on 26 March 1898.1 He is the son of Eustace Mary Morrogh Bernard and Mary Anne Brown.2 He married Nancy Mary Charlton, daughter of Admiral Sir Edward Francis Benedict Charlton and Winifred Mary Stapleton-Bretherton, on 26 October 1933.1
Lt.-Col. Joseph George Morrogh Bernard was educated at Ampleforth College, Ampleforth, Yorkshire, England.1 He joined the Royal Miltary Forces in 1917.1 He fought in the First World War, (wounded).1 He was educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England.1 In 1922 he transfered to the East Yorkshire Regiment.1 Between 1922 and 1932 Lt.-Col. Joseph George Morrogh Bernard was in the service of the Egyptian Army and Sudan Defence Forces.1 He was invested as a Member, Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.) in 1933.1 He fought in the Palestine Campaign between 1936 and 1937, mentioned in despatches.1 He fought in the Second World War, in France, Abyssinia, India, the Middle East and Austria. including the 101 Mission which took Emperor Haile Selassie back to Abyssinia from the Sudan.1 He retired from the military in 1948, with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.1 As of 1976, Lt.-Col. Joseph George Morrogh Bernard lived at Fair Oak Lodge, Fair Oak, Hampshire, England.1
