     Albert Packard was born on 31 May 1820 at Providence, Rhode Island, U.S.A.^G.¹ He married Manuela Burke, daughter of James W. Burke and Maria de los Remedios Josefa Antonio Eayrs, on 24 November 1847 at Santa Barbara, California, U.S.A.^G.¹ He died on 12 November 1901 at age 81 at Santa Barbara, California, U.S.A.^G.¹
     He was a well-known judge at Santa Barbara, CA. He went to sea as a
cabin boy at the age of 13, and had made several voyages to the East
Indies, China, and Japan before attaining his majority. In 1844, he
came to California via Mazatlan, Mexico, and became a Los Angeles
merchant. Among other things, he was one of the first to import and
raise silkworms. He and his wife lived on a lovely 200 acre estate, 'El
Recodo', at Carillo & Ranchero Sts., which was surrounded by magnolias,
