John William Clayton was born on 23 February 1833.1 He was the son of John Lloyd Clayton and Louisa Sophia Littledale.2 He married, firstly, Mary Harietta Charlotte Somerset, daughter of Colonel Henry Charles Capel Somerset and Alice Elizabeth O'Connell, on 4 September 1862.1 He married, secondly, Catherine Mary Gibson, daughter of James Gibson, on 7 April 1892.1 He died on 18 April 1913 at age 80.1
John William Clayton gained the rank of Captain in the service of the 13th Light Dragoons.1 He was invested as a Fellow, Royal Geographical Society (F.R.G.S.).1
