     James Borthwick was born on 25 August 1782.1 He was the son of Archibald Borthwick and Margaret Nicholson Scott.1 He married Sarah Finlay, daughter of William Finlay. He died on 9 October 1866 at age 84.1
     James Borthwick was managing director of North British Insurance Company.1
     He had eight other daughters, all of whom died unmarried.1
