     James Borthwick was the son of William Borthwick, 7th of Crookston and Elizabeth Hoppringle of Hoppringle.1 He married Marietta Merchiston.2 He died on 25 February 1676.1,2 He was buried at Greyfriars Cemetery, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.2
     James Borthwick was registered as a Member, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (M.R.C.S.E.) on 20 March 1645.2 He was Deacon of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh between 1648 and 1651.2 He was Deacon of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh between 1659 and 1661.2 He was a surgeon.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Edinburgh [Scotland] in 1661.2 He lived at Stow, Scotland.1
