William Beardmore, 1st and last Baron Invernairn was born on 16 October 1856.1 He was the son of William Beardmore.2 He married Elspeth Stiven Tullis, daughter of David Tullis, on 11 June 1902.1 He died on 9 April 1936 at age 79, without issue.1,3
William Beardmore, 1st and last Baron Invernairn was educated at High School, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.2 He was educated at Ayr Academy, Ayrshire, Scotland.2 He was educated at School of Mines, South Kensington, London, England.2 He was registered as a Member, Institute of Civil Engineers (M.Inst.C.E.).2 He was chairman and managing director of William Beardmore and Company Ltd.2 He was created 1st Baronet Beardmore [U.K.] on 22 January 1914.2 He was president of the Iron and Steel Institute in 1917.2 He was created 1st Baron Invernairn, of Strathnairn, co. Inverness [U.K.] on 15 January 1921.2 He supported Antarctic exploration, and so Shackleton named the Beardmore Glacier after him.2 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.4
