Peter Buckley, financier and president of the Royal Horticultural
Society, was born on September 23, 1942. He died, after a brief
illness, on December 2, 2008, aged 66. Peter Buckley combined
financial acumen with a passion for horticulture to outstanding effect
as president of the Royal Horticultural Society.
Born into the wealthy Cayzer family — his mother was Heather Cayzer —
he was respected by all who worked with him, in the financial,
horticultural and charitable sectors, for his attention to detail, his
boundless energy and dedication, and his old-fashioned courtesy. As
chief executive then chairman of Caledonia Investments, one of the
UK’s few Stock Exchange-listed venture capital investment trusts, he
was renowned for taking large stakes in companies and maintaining an
executive presence on their boards. One of the most successful
investments was in Close Brothers, one of the few remaining
independent merchant banks based in the City of London.
