The Hon. Lady Maclean of Dunconnel, widow of Sir Fitzroy Maclean of Dunconnel, KT, CBE, 1st Baronet (1911-96), died at Strachur House, Argyll, 7 January, 2005.

Lady Maclean was born the Hon. Veronica Nell Fraser, in 1920, a daughter of the 14th Lord Lovat, KT, GCVO, KCMG, CD, DSO, TD (1871-1933), by his wife, the Hon. Laura Lister, daughter of the 4th Baron Ribblesdale.

She married firstly, 1940, Lt. Alan Phipps, RN (b. 1913), scion of the Marquesses of Normanby. He was killed in action at Leros in 1943; she married secondly, 1946, Fitzroy Hew Maclean, war hero, politician, Knight of the Thistle, and according to some sources the model for Ian Fleming's "James Bond." He was created a Baronet in 1957, and died in 1996.

From her first marriage she leaves a daughter, Susan Rose, who married (1) Richard de la Mare (grandson of the poet Walter de la Mare), and (2) Nicolas Vincent Somerset Paravicini (who had been married previously to Andrew Parker Bowles's sister, Mary Ann); and a son, Brigadier Jeremy Phipps, The Queen's Own Hussars; from her second marriage she leaves two sons, Sir Charles Edward Maclean of Dunconnel, 2nd Baronet, and (Alexander) James Maclean.

The Funeral will take place at St Mun's Church, Dunoon, Argyll on Friday, 14 January, 2005.
