Sir John Thomas Borthwick, MBE, 3rd Baronet, died at New York, USA, 25 October, 2002. He was 84. He was born 5 December, 1917, the elder son of James Alexander Borthwick [1876-1961], second son of the 1st Baronet, by his wife Irene, daughter of George Wise, JP, of Sydney, Australia. His grandfather, Sir Thomas Borthwick, of Whitburgh House, Ford, Midlothian, was created a Baronet, 21 July, 1908, and died 31 July,
1912, before his intended elevation to the peerage, which had been announced 14 June, 1912. The King declared, 8 February, 1913, that his
wife, Letitia Mary, should enjoy the style and title, as if her husband had survived to hold the title and dignity of Baron Whitburgh, but without conferring upon her any of the rights or privileges or the precedence belonging by statute or common law to the widow of a Peer of these Realms, and that his children should have, hold and enjoy the same title, place and precedence, as if their father had survived to hold the title and dignity of a Baron of the United Kingdom. Our subjects father, James Alexander, and his uncles and aunts all received courtesy titles, and his uncle, Thomas Banks Borthwick, succeeded as 2nd Baronet, and was created, Baron Whitburgh. John Thomas Borthwick was educated at Eton, and Trinity College, Oxford. Career: Major, The Rifle Brigade [Territorial Army], served in World War II, MBE, 1945. He succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his uncle, the 1st and last Lord Whitburgh, 29 September, 1967. He married firstly, 4 November, 1939 [divorced 1961], Irene Sophie, the only child of Joseph Heller. He married secondly, 23 January, 1962, Irene, daughter of the late Leo Fink, of Rue Franqueville, Paris XVI. There were three sons of the first marriage, and two sons of the
second. His eldest son, Antony Thomas, born 12 February, 1941, now
succeeds to the baronetcy.

(Dorothy Mary) Prudence (Prue) Borthwick, who died at Edinburgh, 10 December, 2004, was the wife of Malcolm Borthwick, scion of the Borthwick Baronets (created in 1908).

She was the former Dorothy Mary Prudence Barker, 2nd daughter of Alan M. Barker, of Salisbury, and married Malcolm Borthwick in 1966. Her husband is a son of Lt-Col Algernon Borthwick, MC, TD (1907-75), by his wife Edith.

She is survived by her husband and by chlildren, Benedict (b. 1971), Sophie (b. 1967), Kate (b. 1969)

Codrington, eldest daughter of Mr & Mrs Edward Codrington, of Ealing, London.

-.(Elinor) Valerie Fane (nee Borthwick), who died at the Reigate
Beaumont, 22 December, 2008, formerly of.—Hoo, Suffolk, was the widow of a scion of the Earls of Westmorland (Earl E, 1624), and was a scion of the Barony of Whitburgh (ext); she was b Elinor Valerie Borthwick in 1915, dau of the Hon William Borthwick (1879-1956), by his wife Ruth Margery (d 1971), dau of Jason Rigby, MICE, of Wimbledon SW.

Her father was a yr son of Sir Thomas Borthwick, 1st Baronet
(1835-1912), who was nominated a peer in June 1912 but who died in
July 1912 before the Letters Patent passed the Great Seal. The
baronet's widow received a Royal Licence in Feb 1913 to use the title
Baroness Whitburgh. The 2nd Baronet was created Baron Whitburgh in Dec 1912, and his siblings (including Valerie's father) were raised to the
rank of the sons of a baron.


She married 1940, Maj Robert Wm Augustus Fane, MBE (1913-89), scion of the Earls of Westmorland, and leaves issue, Priscilla, Anne, Andrew,
Angela and Peter, & grandchildren Matthew, Simon, Catherine, Charles,
Thomas and Isabel. Funeral on Monday 5 January 2009 at Hoo Church.

England and Wales. She was b Winifred Letitia Borthwick, 3 Jun 1936,
scion of the Borthwick Baronets, dau of Algernon Borthwick, MC;
married Stephen Tumim, 1962; 3 daughters.
