Father of Clare Joanna de Poulton Cotterell, wife of Rupert Sherman John Cotterell is

Brigadier John Gordon Goddard de Poulton Ferguson, OBE, DL, (commanded 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards), son of Dr Stanley Fisher Ferguson, second son of John Ferguson and Annie Victoria Makin Ferguson, daughter of Rev Thomas Fisher of Termoneeny, County Londonderry, see Burkes Landed Gentry 1952 Williams-Fisher (formerly Fisher) of Eastcote, senior branch of the Fisher family with common ancestry with Baron Fisher of Kilverstone (see Burkes Peerage for full family lineage).

Brigadier Ferguson (b. 5 Mar 1943) married 5 Jan 1968, Celia Mary Ferguson, nee Herdman (b. 20 Jun 1943), parents of Clare Cotterell, born 12 October 1968.

Celia Mary Ferguson is daughter of Commander Claudius Alexander Herdman DL, RN., of Sion Mills, County Tyrone, son of John Claudius Herdman OBE, DL (see Herdman of Sion House, county Tyrone, Burkes Irish Family Records 1976 and Burkes Landed Gentry of Ireland 1958) and Maud Harriet Herdman, MBE, JP, daughter of Maj Gen Alexander Clark-Kennedy and Mary Jane Welsh. He was son of Maj Gen Alexander Clark-Kennedy of Knockgray, Kirkcudbrightshire, and grandson of Lt Gen Alexander Kennedy Clark-Kennedy the Waterloo hero. The present head of the Clark-Kennedy family is Colonel John Clark-Kennedy of Knockgray whose father, Rev Archibald Clark-Kennedy, was Maud Harriet Herdman's brother (see Burkes Landed Gentry, Clark-Kennedy of Knockgray).

The Arms and Pedigrees of both the Ferguson and Herdman families are registered with the College of Arms.
Ferguson of Knockinkerragh and Articrunagh, of the Parish of Ballyrashane, of the City of Londonderry, all county Londonderry, of Conagher, Parish of Ballymoney, County Antrim, and of the Parish of Burt, county Donegal. (This family includes the extinct Baronetcy which died out with the death of Sir Robert Ferguson MP, 2nd Bart, of The Farm, Londonderry in 1860).
