The 10th Lord Polwarth, TD, Vice-Lord Lieutenant of the Borders Region (Roxburgh, Ettrick & Lauderdale), 1975-91; Member of the Royal Company of Archers; a Scots Repesentative Peer, 1945-63; chartered accountant, died at his home, 4 January, 2005. He was aged 88.

He was born Henry Alexander Hepburne-Scott, 17 November, 1916, son of the Hon. Walter Thomas Hepburne-Scott (d. 1942), and was educated at Eton College, and King's College, Cambridge.

Career: served as a Captain with the Lothian & Borders Yeomanry in the Second World War; former partner in the firm of Chiene and Tate, Chartered Accountants of Edinburgh; Governor of the Bank of Scotland, 1966-72, Director 1950-72, and from 1974 to 1987; Chairman, General Accident & Fire Life Assurance Corporation, 1968-72; Director, I.C.I. Ltd, 1969-72, 1974-81; Director, Canadian Pacific, Co; Minister of State, Scottish Office, 1972-74; Chairman and later President, Scottish Council (Development and Industry) 1955-72; Mmeber of the Franco-British Council, 1981-90; Member, House of Lords Select Committee on Trade, 1984-85; Chairman, Scottish National Orchestra Society, 1975-79; Chairman, Scottish Forestry Trust, 1987-90; Chancellor, Aberdeen University, 1966-86; &c.

He succeeded as 10th Lord Polwarth (Peerage of Scotland cr. 1690) on the demise of his grandfather, 1944.

Lord Polwarth married twice, firstly, in 1943, to Caroline Margaret (divorced 1969, she died 1982), daughter of Captain Robert Athole Hay, scion of the Hay Baronets (cr. 1635); he married secondly, 1969, Jean, daughter of Admiral Sir Angus Edward Malise Bontine Cunninghame Graham of Gartmore and of Ardoch, KBE, CB, and formerly wife of Charles Eliot Jauncey, QC (later Baron Jauncey of Tullichettle, a life baron).

His home in recent years was at Wellfield Parva, Hawkchurch, Axminster, Devon.

Lord Polwarth is survived by his wife and one son and three daughters (issue of his first union).He leaves 2 step-sons and one step daughter from his second marriage.

He is succeeded in the peerage by his only son, the Hon. Andrew Walter Hepburne-Scott, styled Master of Polwarth, born 30 Nov, 1947.

The funeral takes place at Roberton, on Friday, 14 January, 2005.

The engagement was announced 4 March 2008, between the Hon William Henry Hepburne-Scott (b 1973), the Master of Polwarth, elder son of the 11th Lord Polwarth (b 30 Nov 1947), and Lady Polwarth, of Harden, Hawick, and Donna L. Carlier, daughter of Major General and Mrs Neil Carlier, of Ewshot, Surrey.

The engagement was announced 16 Oct 2008, between Walter Robert Hepburne Scott (b 1974), scion of the Lords Polwarth, elder son of Mr James Patrick Hepburne Scott (b 1947), of Lauder, Berwickshire, by his wife the former Christian Diana Surtees, and Tatum A. White, elder daughter of Mr Ian White and the late Mrs Maria Pia White, of Holland Park, London.

HEPBURNE SCOTT
The Hon Francis Michael, MC, second son of The Master of Polwarth,
late The Lothians and Border Horse.
Peacefully, after a short illness, on 19 September.
Beloved husband of Marjorie and father of James, Mary and Michael.
Funeral private. A service of thanksgiving for his life will be held
at Lilliesleaf Kirk on Friday 29 October at 2.30 pm.
He was the son of Walter Thomas HEPBURNE SCOTT, Master of Polwarth
(1890-1942) and Elspeth Glencairn (d 1964, dau of Rt Rev Archibald
Euan CAMPBELL DD,DCL,Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway and the Hon Helen
Anna BRODRICK dau of 8th Viscount MIDLETON). He was raised to the rank
of a lord of Parliament's son in 1945 (his elder brother having succ
his gf as 10th Lord in 1944). He m 1946 Marjorie Hamilton dau of
Horatio John ROSS of Biggar Park, Biggar and scion of the LIGHTON Bts.
They had 2 sons and a dau (the latter has m a scion of the Earls of
ONSLOW).

_Donna Hepburne-Scott, Mistress of Polwarth, wife of the Hon William Henry Hepburne-Scott (b 1973), the Master of Polwarth, gave birth to a daughter, Rose Florence, 28 April,. 2012, a sister for Harry Walter, who was born 21 March, 2010. The Master of Polwarth is the elder son of the 11th Lord Polwarth (b 30 Nov 1947), and Lady Polwarth, of Harden, Hawick, and Donna is the daughter of Major General and Mrs Neil Carlier, of Ewshot, Surrey.
