[Michael Rhodes]

Baroness Butler of Saffron Walden, who died 18 February 2009. aged
101, was the 2nd wife, and widow, of the Baron Butler of Saffron
Walden, KG, CH, PC _aka RAB Butler_ the politician seen as heir
apparent to Macmillan who failed to attain the office of Prime
Minister in 1963_. She was the former Mollie Montgomerie, b 10
September, 1907, dau Frank Douglas Montgomerie, and descended from the
Lords Napier & Ettrick; she married (i) Jan 1932, Augustine Courtauld
(d 1959), scion of that LG family, by who she had four sons and 2
daughters; married (ii) Oct 1959, R.A. Butler, afterwards Baron Butler
of Saffron Walden, created a life peer, & who d 1982. (Butler's 1st
wife, Sydney Courtauld, had been a cousin of Mollie's husband
Augustine).

The Butlers owned Gatcombe Park, Glos, which property was bought by HM The Queen in 1976 for Princess Anne and Capt Mark Phillips.

BUTLER Sir Richard Clive died peacefully on 28th January 2012 aged 83.
Much loved husband of Sue and father of Antonia, Michael and
Christopher and grandfather of ten..—Private family funeral.
Thanksgiving Service to be held at St. Mary's Church, Saffron Walden
on 7th March at 2.30 p.m. Family flowers only. Donations, if wished,
to Arthritis Research (UK) c/o Daniel Robinson & Sons, 52 Trinity
Street, Halstead, Essex. CO9 1GB.

He was the son of the LP Baron BUTLER OF SAFFRON WALDEN (1902-82),
scion of that gentry family formerly of Bourton, and his 1st Sydney
Elizabeth (1902-54), d of Samuel Augustine COURTAULD, scion of that
gentry family formerly of Gosfield. He m 1952 Susan (Sue) Anne Maud (b
1930), d of Maj Patrick Bruce WALKER MBE of Stones Place, Lincoln,
scion of the WALKER Bts of Sand Hutton, and had 2 sons and a dau as
above.
